I always start at the foundation- let's take a look at your feet.
if one can't get into a low squat, we usually blame the ankle. but it often turns out to be an over pronation in the foot, which leads further up the chain to the hip, which then rotates internally when it should be neutral. this translates to knee pain because the hinge that the knee is supposed to be gliding on is suddenly thrown out of its chain. your knees may cave in when you squat, or they may flare out. or maybe they do some weird shaking thing where the body has no idea what to do with the knees and the motion feels jagged.
This is normal. Most people don't think to look at the hip when tackling knee pain because it's really just a side effect of a different issue. - 4Hips and Lumbar spine
